Fashion is as dynamic as it is cyclical, with old trends making comebacks when you least expect it. For the past couple of years, crochet has been taking over the spotlight. From runway shows to Instagram feeds (and especially my Pinterest feed), crochet is showing up everywhere, making it one of the hottest trends of 2024.
Why Crochet?
Crochet brings a unique, nostalgic charm that’s hard to resist. With its intricate details and handmade appeal, crochet fashion taps into our yearning for sustainable and artisanal items.
It translates effortlessly across different styles, from boho-chic dresses to modern, high-fashion tops and even accessories.
Celebrities Embracing the Crochet Trend
No trend truly takes off without a little celebrity endorsement. This year, pop culture icons and fashion influencers are giving crochet their stamp of approval.
Taylor Swift
Taylor Swift has been spotted in an array of crochet outfits, from casual tops to breathtaking concert dresses. Her effortless style and influence have undeniably fueled crochet’s resurgence.
Benny Blanco
At the 2024 Grammys, Benny Blanco was spotted in a dope granny square set that looks just like grandma’s blankets.
Martha Stewart
Martha Stewart was rocking a gorgeous crochet dress from Brunello Cucinelli in a recent Instagram post.
Chrissy Teigen
Looking iconic as always, Chrissy Teigen posted this IG photo rocking the most gorgeous white crochet dress.
How to Incorporate Crochet Into Your Wardrobe
Ready to jump on the crochet bandwagon? Here are some versatile ways you can embrace this trend:
Crochet Tops
Pair a delicate crochet top with denim shorts for a casual day out or layer it under a blazer for a more polished look. For example, this unique floral crochet tank from Altar’d State is to die for.
Crochet Dresses
Perfect for summer, a crochet dress can be both flirty and sophisticated. Opt for bright colors for a festival vibe or neutral tones for a beach day. I have my eyes on this mesmerizing crochet dress from Cotton On (pictured above).
Crochet Accessories
Not ready to commit to a full crochet outfit? Start small with crochet bags, hats, or even jewelry. This crochet tote bag from Princess Polly is beyond cute (and it doubles as a grocery bag).
DIY Crochet: A Sustainability Angle
One of the most appealing aspects of the crochet trend is the potential for DIY projects. Creating your own crochet clothing is not only satisfying and fun, but also environmentally friendly.
We love that crocheting involves fewer resources compared to mass-produced fashion items, making it a more sustainable choice.
How difficult is it to learn? Well, I spent an evening trying to learn crochet and I figured out a couple of the main stitch types – I even made a little granny square.
I definitely need more practice, but it was very satisfying that I was able to make that much progress in one evening.
Based on my experience, I’d say it’s easy to learn as long as you have the patience to make it through the first confusion. It’s also pretty affordable, I just started out with a cheap crochet needle set and a cheap skein of yarn from my local Michael’s.
Tutorials and patterns are widely available online, catering to all skill levels. Whether you’re a seasoned crafter or a beginner, there’s something for everyone. I personally started with a Youtube video (I watched a few until I found one that really clicked).
How to Wear Crochet Year-Round
One might think crochet is limited to warm weather, but that’s far from the truth (although crochet is absolutely amazing for summertime). However, there are so many different types of crochet stitches that you can find crochet clothes for any season.
If you’re obsessed with crochet, here’s how you can wear crochet all year round:
Spring/Summer
Embrace the breezy vibes with light, airy crochet pieces:
- Floral-patterned crochet tops
- Loose, flowy crochet dresses
- Crochet beach cover-ups
Fall/Winter
Cozy up with these warm and stylish crochet items:
- Thick crochet scarves and shawls
- Chunky crochet sweaters
- Layered crochet skirts
Shopping for Crochet
If DIY isn’t your thing, don’t worry. Nearly every popular brand is hopping onto the crochet trend, making it easier than ever to find stunning pieces.
Here are some top places where you can score fabulous crochet fashion:
- Retail Brands: Mainstream brands like Zara and H&M have released stylish crochet collections that cater to various tastes and budgets.
- Niche Boutiques: Look to specialty stores focusing on sustainable, handmade fashions for unique, high-quality crochet items. For example, Revel Rey has some mesmerizing pieces.
- Online Marketplaces: Platforms like Etsy and Depop are goldmines for one-of-a-kind, handmade crochet pieces.
Caring for Your Crochet Pieces
To keep your crochet items looking fresh and fabulous, follow these care tips:
- Wash Gently: Hand wash your crochet clothes in cold water with a mild detergent. Avoid wringing them out to prevent stretching.
- Dry Flat: Lay items flat to dry to maintain their shape and prevent snagging.
- Store Carefully: Fold and store crochet items in a cool, dry place. Avoid hanging them up as this can distort their shape.
The Future of Crochet in Fashion
As we look towards a future where sustainability and individuality take precedence in the fashion world, crochet is likely to continue its rise. Personally, I’m obsessed with crochet and hope it never goes out of style.
So, whether you’re inspired by Taylor Swift’s crochet outfits or eager to try your hand at making your own pieces, there’s no better time to embrace the crochet revival of 2024.
