For comfortable boots that can polish any outfit in seconds, Chelsea boots check all the boxes. With elastic sides for flexible wear, this wardrobe staple is an easy, modern addition to punch up any look. Not many shoes transcend gender barriers, but Chelsea boots are a winner for anyone looking for snazzy fashion that doesn’t sacrifice style for comfort.

If you want to take your pair of boots to the next level, we’re going to dive into some examples of how to wear Chelsea boots that can help you showcase those beautiful booties in any setting. I’ve asked for the advice of three fashion experts to help me find the best combos:

  • Alyson Cambell – a Fashion Expert who’s worked with brands from Jeremy Scott, Monique Lhullier, Thakoon, Alexandre Herkovitch, and more.
  • Dylan Capelle – Fashion stylist / Creative Director of Noir Nice

How to Wear Chelsea Boots

  • Keep it Simple. “Chelsea boots are super versatile and look great on a variety of feet . . . You can pair them with many things, though I personally think they look best with a just above the ankle cut skinny jean or a slim fitting pair of trousers.”– Alyson Cambell
  • Match Colors with your Outfits. “Try out a mix of complementary colors and textures to accentuate the look of the boot.” – Lisa Sanchez
  • The Perfect Pant Length. “Make sure the length of trousers are just over top of shoes… Ripped jeans, suits, chinos look great with those.” – Dylan Capelle
  • Keep ’em clean. “Get a water and stain resistant spray to keep your shoes clean at any time.” – Dylan Capelle (view our favorite waterproof sprays).
  • Socks – yes or no? A short pair of socks peeking out of your Chelsea boots can add an entire new element to the right outfit!

How Not to Wear Chelsea Boots

  • No Tucking! “Do not tuck in your pants if the length of the trouser is too long or too loose.” – Dylan Capelle
  • Don’t cover up or over-expose. “The last thing you want to do with Chelsea Boots is to cover them up with a wide leg pant… (and) Do not wear Chelsea Boots with shorts!” – Lisa Sanchez
  • Don’t dress down too much. “I personally don’t recommend down-styling anything with these boots. For example, they just don’t look great to meet with a casual sweatpant/loose jogger; save your sneakers for that.”  – Alyson Cambell

Overall, chelsea boots are a beautiful shoe that magically improves any outfit. Truthfully, I don’t believe there’s a “wrong” way to wear these boots – some of the experts also said not to roll your pants above the boots, but I’m a big fan of rolled jeans and will continue to roll them.
