10 Best Face Masks For Oily Skin – So Long, Acne

Last Updated: May 10, 2021

If you struggle with oily skin and/or acne, a mask could be the solution! There are a variety of great face masks that can balance it out and help reduce acne – keep reading to discover the best face mask for oily skin that perfectly fits your needs.

What to Look For

Before we dive in, some ingredients to look for are mud, salicylic acid, and benzoyl peroxide. Mud masks are great for drawing out oil and impurities, salicylic acid helps to dry out pimples, and benzoyl peroxide kills bacteria and purifies the skin.

Below, we have shared a variety of different masks for oily skin that include some of these ingredients, as well as other beneficial ingredients that will clear up your skin and balance it out in no time!

Best Face Masks for Oily Skin

Proactiv Skin Purifying Mask

This mask is named the best face mask for oily skin by many people who struggle with acne. It is the harshest of the bunch, but if you need a really drying out mask, then this is perfect. It’s a mud mask formulated with 6% sulfur, which dries out the skin and unclogs pores.

Using this mask will get you the long-term effects of the mud slowly drawing out the deepest impurities, with the shorter-term benefits of the sulfur drying out your breakouts-to-be.

Mario Badescu Special Mask For Oily Skin

Wow, who would have guessed that Mario Badescu’s Special Mask For Oily Skin would be good for oily skin?

The mask is formulated with kaolin clay which purifies the skin by drawing out impurities, bentonite clay which absorbs excess oil and helps to mattify the skin, and calamine which soothes the skin (which is really great for reducing the redness and inflammation that can accompany a breakout).

The Ordinary Salicylic Acid 2% Masque

With its 2% Salicylic Acid, this mask is pretty much a shoe-in for being good for acne, since the salicylic acid dries out blemishes and flushes out pores.

The formulation also includes charcoal, which has strong antibacterial and cleansing properties.

Peter Thomas Roth Irish Moor Mud Purifying Black Mask

This is my absolute favorite mask of all time. The reasons are threefold.

  1. It’s the only mask I’ve ever tried where my pores looked visibly smaller after I washed it off. Like, right after I washed it off. Skincare doesn’t usually give immediate results, but this mask sure does.
  1. It’s one of the few mud masks that doesn’t dry and crack on your skin. Usually you know your mask is done once your skin is uncomfortably tight and it hurts to smile. But with this mask, you can move your face normally without the mask pulling uncomfortably on your skin.
  1. It has a good formulation. The mud and charcoal draw out impurities, the kaolin and bentonite clays purifies the skin and absorbs excess oil respectively, and the lactic acid exfoliates. This mask is truly doing it all, and it does it well!

Aztec Secret Indian Healing Clay Mask

This mask has 1 ingredient: calcium bentonite clay. This clay draws out impurities, reduces excess oiliness, and truly purifies the skin.

It comes in a powdered form, which you’re supposed to mix with either water or apple cider vinegar. If you need even more deep cleansing, go for the vinegar. If you have sensitive skin, go for the water.

OLEHENRIKSEN Cold Plunge Pore Mask

If you’ve read my article on Fun Face Masks, you might have noticed there was a warming mask in that list. Well, this is the exact opposite.

This mask feels very cold on your skin, which helps tighten up your pores. It is formulated with clay to draw out impurities, AHA and BHA for exfoliating purposes, and extracts from green tea, eucalyptus, algae, and Irish moss to absorb excess oil.

CLINIQUE Acne Solutions™ Oil-Control Cleansing Mask

Clinique’s Acne Solutions line has some baller products when it comes to eliminating acne, and this mask is no exception. It has salicylic acid for drying and cleansing, and kaolin clay for drawing out impurities.

It is also formulated with Chamomilla Recutita and aloe, which have calming properties and help to make this mask ideal for anyone with sensitive oily skin.

Glossier Mega Greens Galaxy Pack

This mask is mainly formulated with kaolin clay (again, great for drawing out impurities so your pores are squeaky clean), but it also has some fancy fruits and vegetables that do various things to your skin.

The bitter orange peel exfoliates, the parsley and spinach draw out impurities and cleanse the skin (who would have known that a salad could do that?), and the eight different superfruits provide antioxidants, which reduce skin damage from ultraviolet light and pollution.

Origins Clear Improvement® Active Charcoal Mask to Clear Pores

This is a classic mud mask formulated with kaolin and bentonite (which I’ve explained the benefits of previously), charcoal powder for drawing out impurities, and interestingly enough, Myrtle leaf water. Myrtle leaf water helps improve the lifespan of skin cells and reduce glycation

Glycation is essentially where your skin would become more brittle and delicate. So, reducing glycation is important. Myrtle leaf water is a great ingredient for this mask – while the other ingredients are busy dealing with acne and oiliness, the Myrtle can really get in there and improve elasticity, providing a more youthful appearance.

Neutrogena Rapid Clear Stubborn Acne Daily Leave-on Mask

This mask is not a traditional mask in the sense that you wash it off after a certain time period.  You leave it on, and let the formula sink into the skin. So, it’s more like a treatment.

This mask/treatment has 2.5% benzoyl peroxide, which kills bacteria and purifies the skin. Benzoyl peroxide is a fantastic ingredient for fighting acne, because it doesn’t just dry out the skin, it actually goes to the source of the problem and kills it.

Bottom Line

We hope you found your best face mask for oily skin! Just keep in mind that no matter how much masking you do, that is no substitution for a proper skincare routine. However, these masks can work wonders on your skin when used in tandem with a good cleanser and other products that you use on the daily.
